> Twenty-two: Among the ten vows in giving ornaments, the first one benefits others, and the latter nine benefit oneself. Within them, the first three concern the body, the middle three concern speech, and the latter three concern the mind. Among them, regarding the marks of a hundred merits, earlier text has already cited the explanation in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, fascicle twenty-four. According to the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle fifty-three, they are called the hundred meritorious practices. Hence the treatise states: 'Furthermore, the moral discipline subsumed under the hundred practices means: minor refraining from killing up to wrong view makes ten; second, extensive refraining from killing and so forth; third, complete refraining; fourth, brief refraining; fifth, prolonged refraining; sixth, lifelong refraining; seventh, refraining by oneself; eighth, teaching others to refrain; ninth, praising and extolling refraining through immeasurable approaches; tenth, seeing refraining from killing and so forth, rejoicing deeply with great bliss. Ten approaches each having ten, collectively spoken of as a hundred practices, and the amount of merit generated is also like this.' This is only spoken with respect to the thirty-two marks of the transformation body of the shared teaching. If relying on this sūtra, the sea of marks of the ten bodies is accomplished through inexhaustible causes corresponding to each and every mark. Thus, the verse by the water-ruling spirit Universally Raising Cloud Banners earlier states: 'Pure gates of compassion, numerous as the dust motes of kṣetras, / Together give birth to a single wondrous mark of the Tathāgata,' and so forth. The rest can be understood.
