> 2. Clarifying the varieties. Or it is solely of a single flavor without distinctions. Or it is divided into two, namely the suchness of the emptiness of persons and the suchness of the emptiness of dharmas. Furthermore, there are two: established (vyavasthāpya) and unestablished (avyavasthāpya). Furthermore, there are two: empty and non-empty. These are all as commonly explained. Or it is divided into three, distinguished in terms of the three natures, as in the Yogācārabhūmi and so forth. Or it is divided into seven: 1. the suchness of transmigration (pravṛtti-tathatā), which is the real nature of the transmigration of conditioned formations; 2. the suchness of real marks (lakṣaṇa-tathatā), which is the contemplation of dharmas as being without the nature of the two selves; 3. the suchness of consciousness-only (vijñaptimātra-tathatā), which is the nature of consciousness-only; 4. establishment (samudaya-tathatā); 5. wrong practice (mithyā-pratipatti-tathatā); 6. purification (viśuddhi-tathatā); 7. correct practice (samyak-pratipatti-tathatā)—these four are successively the essential natures of the four noble truths, as expounded in the Prakaraṇāryavācā. Or it is divided into ten, which will be clarified under the ten stages. Or there are a hundred gates, ten times ten without end, as analyzed in the present sūtra; then all those listed above are merely one meaning among them; even saying that it pervades all dharmas is merely one meaning as well.
