> Fifth, explaining the purpose of empowerment; hence the treatise states: "Why is empowerment bestowed?" Yet, looking directly at the sūtra text, it should be divided into two: first, a general explanation; and second, from "namely" onward, a specific clarification. The treatise does not have the two characters for "namely"; therefore, it takes the phrase "entering the stage of wisdom" from the specific and incorporates it into the initial general phrase, so that combining the general and the specific yields only twenty phrases. The first ten are based on the practice of self-benefit, and the latter ten on the practice of benefiting others; though the meanings are mutually inclusive, they are distinguished according to the preponderance, wishing to reveal the distinct marks of the two benefits. Now, relying on the treatise's explanation, within the first ten phrases, the treatise explains them through two approaches: (1) directly explaining the sūtra text, and (2) synthesizing root and branch. The first approach begins by explaining the general phrase. That sūtra says: "Furthermore, to clearly explain to all bodhisattvas the inconceivable Dharma of the Buddhas, causing them to enter the stage of wisdom." Since it incorporated the specific phrase into the general, the divisions and combinations between the sūtra and the treatise differ. What the treatise-sūtra calls "clear" is "radiance" in the present sūtra, differing only in extent. That one says "clearly explain", while this one says "explain the inconceivable"; that text had not reversed the phrasing, which is simply a difference in the dialects of the sūtra and the treatise.
