> Third, regarding the obstacles severed: fascicle nine of the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi states, 'The obstacle of the state of an ordinary person (pṛthagjanatva) is severed here; that is, the conceptually arisen portions of the two obstacles, because the state of an ordinary person is established based on their seeds.' When the path of vision (darśanamārga) of the two vehicles appears directly before them, they sever only one type \[of obstacle\], which is called attaining noble nature. When the bodhisattva's path of vision appears directly before them, they completely sever both types, which is called attaining noble nature. Here, the term 'differently born' (yisheng) is simply the worldling; in the Liang translation of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha it is called 'the nature of an ordinary person'. In the fundamental section of this treatise it is called 'the obstacle of the mark of the ordinary person's self', and this obstacle obstructs the first stage. Above, it was said that the two obstacles are severed because they are the root capable of giving rise to afflictions; if spoken of completely, they also sever the various karmic fruits and so forth of the unfortunate destinies. For this reason, the first stage is said to sever two kinds of ignorance and their crude heavy residue (dauṣṭhulya): first, the ignorance of grasping at self and dharmas, which is the obstacle of the state of an ordinary person; second, the ignorance of the defilements of the unfortunate destinies, which refers to the karmic fruits and so forth of the unfortunate destinies. Although these karmic fruits and so forth are not themselves ignorance, they belong to the category of ignorance; the ignorances in the subsequent nine stages are all modeled on this. The meaning of severing is as explained previously under the demarcations.
