> Next is the proper explanation of the text, which is divided into three sections overall: first, the section of praise and request; second, the section of the main exposition; third, the section of restatement in verse. Now, regarding the first: the six verses are divided into two parts: the first three celebrate what came before, and the latter three request what follows. In the former, the first verse is the compiler's preface; the latter two verses speak words praising the speaker and the taught. Within this, "excellent" is general, and the eighth line is the conclusion. Specifically clarifying the capable speaker has two aspects: the former verse contains benevolence, and the latter verse contains compassion; hence it says "benefit." What is spoken also has two aspects: the former verse treats the marks of the teaching, hence it says "discipline"; the latter verse treats the marks of realization, hence it says "subtle." It is "real" because it accords with the noumenon. It is "non-different" because a thousand sages tread the same path. It is "without distinction" because the noumenon pervades phenomena. In the latter three verses requesting what follows, there are two parts: the first two verses are the assembly's request. The former verse makes a general request for the teachings of the third stage, meaning the karma of the three wisdoms corresponding to that teaching; the latter verse specifically requests the practices of the ten perfections, because they are common to every stage. Benevolence and compassion are vows; the "way" refers to the power of the way; the "pure practice of the buddhas" is precisely undefiled wisdom. The final verse is the request by the leader.
