> The third \[fruit\], the excellence of transforming and guiding sentient beings, has two parts: first, directly clarifying the transformation of sentient beings; second, from 'Sons of the Buddha' onward, concluding the practice and achieving the benefit. Now, the first has two parts: first, universally gathering sentient beings with the four means of embracing (saṃgrahavastu); second, from 'manifesting physical bodies' onward, specifically clarifying the four means of embracing. The text has eight phrases: First, manifesting physical bodies is the gathering through collegiality (samānārthatā), because one accommodates sentient beings according to need, transforming them into one's own assembly. Second, expounding the Dharma is the gathering through affectionate speech (priyavāditā); truthful speech and Dharma speech constitute the nature of affectionate speech, and within all kinds of affectionate speech, it mostly concerns exposition; the treatise states, 'For doubtful sentient beings', which refers to speech in all approaches. Third, from 'revealing' onward, all are gathered under beneficial conduct (arthacaryā). This phrase demonstrates bodhisattva practice for sentient beings who lack expedients toward bodhi, which is the intrinsic nature of beneficial conduct. Fourth, displaying the Buddha's awe-inspiring power for sentient beings weary of the Mahāyāna, which is making all beneficial conduct, not yet accomplished, become accomplished. Fifth, showing faults and perils to sentient beings who delight in worldly things due to their attachment to wealth and status, clarifying that great status brings great anxiety, and much wealth brings many misfortunes. Sixth, praising the Tathāgata's wisdom for those who do not have faith in the Mahāyāna and have not previously practiced superior virtues. Seventh, displaying supernormal powers for foolish non-Buddhists. The above three are beneficial conduct that is difficult to practice. Eighth, universally revealing all approaches and all types of beneficial conduct; therefore, it says 'various expedients'. However, beneficial conduct and affectionate speech may also be used interchangeably, because through that affectionate speech showing what they should study is precisely beneficial conduct; and immediately below, giving is extensively explained. In this specific \[enumeration\], the four means of embracing are briefly omitted; their extensive meaning is analyzed as in fascicle forty-three of the Yogācārabhūmi. In the second part, concluding the practice and achieving the benefit, it first concludes the preceding, and from 'the mind is constantly' onward, achieves the benefit. 'Proceeding toward the Buddha's wisdom' means seeking even greater power to transform sentient beings; the remaining text means that what has already been practiced does not regress, and what has not yet been practiced is further cultivated.
