> Third, the section of restated verses. If following the extended division, it corresponds to the tenth. Within it there are two: first, the manner and intention of speaking the gāthās; second, directly revealing the words of the gāthās. Now the first: first the manner is spoken, and then, beginning with 'Wishing to praise,' the intention is spoken. The intention has nine phrases; the general purport is the same as the previous assemblies, and is now explained in terms of this present assembly. The first phrase reveals the first stage. The next phrase is the second stage, taking the three clusters of precepts as the sphere of practice. The third is the third and fourth stages, because the revulsion of dhyāna and supramundane wisdom are both the power of the practice of purifying cultivation. The fourth is the fifth stage, because the five sciences accomplish the wisdom of all species. The fifth is the sixth stage, because prajñā is able to remove defilements. The sixth is the seventh stage, emptiness and existence being unobstructed, conferring all-knowledge. The seventh is the eighth stage, effortless inconceivable wisdom adorning the three worlds. The eighth is the ninth and tenth stages, being able to expound and receive all merits. The ninth is the general conclusion, pointing back to the above eight phrases. The meaning of such stages being spoken in verse is said to 'further open and reveal.' Second, directly revealing the words of the gāthās: there are forty-two gāthās, divided into three: the first single gāthā generally praises and encourages listening; the last single gāthā concludes by declaring it inexhaustible; the middle verses directly expounding are divided into eight. The first thirteen gāthās versify the section on the stage of fulfilling skillful means, wherein the first two and a half gāthās generally versify the merit of skillful selection among the common marks of the previous nine stages, and the remaining versify the distinctive meanings of each stage. If following the general subsumption, they versify the previous ten stages in sequence: among the first eight stages, only the third stage has half a gāthā, the others each having one gāthā; the ninth stage has three gāthās while also concluding entry into the station. Second, there is one gāthā versifying the samādhi section. Third, there are five and a half gāthās versifying the section on receiving the station. Fourth, there are three and a half gāthās versifying the section on great exhaustion. Fifth, there are three gāthās versifying the section on explaining the names. Sixth, there are two gāthās versifying the section on spiritual power being surpassable and unsurpassable. Seventh, there are four and a half gāthās versifying the fruits of the previous stations, which are also subsumed under the section on spiritual power, as distinguished in the prose. Eighth, there are seven and a half gāthās versifying the section on the reflections of the stages, wherein the first three and a half gāthās versify the mountain simile, the next two gāthās the ocean simile, and the last two gāthās the jewel simile. The pond and the section on the benefits of the stages are omitted in the text and not versified. Its section on benefits can also be versified by the concluding exposition on being inexhaustible. The Ten Stages are finished.
