> Second, the ship captain Vaira corresponds to the indestructible pariṇāmanā. Vaira is translated here as "mastery," meaning that he has already skillfully mastered the ocean of the Buddha's teachings, can skillfully convey across the ocean of birth and death, and has deep, indestructible faith in all phenomena; hence he is named "Mastery." His being in the city of Prāsāda is because through this pariṇāmanā he causes bodhicitta to grow still further, compassion and wisdom relying on one another and becoming preeminent. In the text, first, within proceeding to seek \[the teaching\] in accordance with instructions: first, he contemplates the path in accordance with instructions, because at the beginning of the path of pariṇāmanā he attains indestructibility. The Buddha's path is high, and the rest are all low. Birth and death and nirvāṇa are the level and the precarious; obstruction and non-obstruction are the pure and the defiled. The two vehicles are crooked, the bodhisattva is straight, and so forth. Later, below "Gradually," he proceeds to seek the subsequent station and gives rise to superior mindfulness, meaning that because the bodhisattva path is obtained through persons, he immediately attains indestructible faith in the bodhisattva dharmabhāṇaka. Therein, first he states it directly, and later questions and explains it; this can be understood.
