The "Purifying Practice" chapter adds "defilement and purity," because it pertains to both with-outflows and without-outflows. The Buddha knows them all well, and knows the various fruits obtained on their basis, hence it is called a knowledge power. How does this differ from the knowledge power of one's own karma? Knowing that beings are capable of cultivating various concentrations—that they can enter this one and not the others—is called the power of one's own karma. Knowing that based on such concentrations as dhyāna, one displays the three miracles to instruct the sentient beings to be transformed without error, is due to the knowledge power of dhyāna. In the verse, the first half indicates what is known, and the second half indicates skillful application.
