> Regarding the commentary's "Second, clarifying that it is established because tathatā accords with conditions," this reconciles with the meaning of according with conditions in the previous distinction between tathatā according with conditions and remaining motionless. Conditions arise from the true; hence they are established relying on principle. Because apart from the tathāgatagarbha all dharmas cannot be obtained, as explained in the "Clarifying Inquiries Chapter." Regarding the commentary's "Fourth, the gate where phenomena can reveal principle," it is divided into two: first, directly clarifying; second, adducing scriptural proof. In the former, "meaning that because phenomena gather principle to be established" takes up the preceding third gate. "Therefore phenomena are empty while principle is real": because phenomena are established by gathering principle, apart from principle there are no phenomena; therefore phenomena are empty, while principle is real. Because phenomena are empty, they can reveal real principle. If phenomena had reality, the real principle would be concealed. Because phenomena are empty, the principle within the entirety of phenomena stands prominently revealed, just as the emptiness of the characteristics of waves causes the water to appear. Because waves gather water to be formed, waves are empty and water is real; therefore waves can reveal water. If one speaks of water apart from waves, that is clarifying emptiness outside of phenomena. Regarding the commentary's "The paratantra lacks self-nature..." and so on, this explains and completes the above meaning; that is, it reconciles with the meaning of identity in the previous distinction between the emptiness, existence, identity, and separation of the paratantra. Since it says that naturelessness is precisely the pariniṣpanna, it clarifies that it is not merely without the parikalpita false nature. Distinctly possessing the pariniṣpanna is the principle that is revealed. Afterwards, from "Yama..." onward, it adduces scriptural proof. In total it cites three passages: First, the Yama verses, which are the verses of Bodhisattva Lilin, three continuous verses. Second, it cites the "Ten Forbearances Chapter," namely the forbearance of \[understanding all as\] an echo. Third, it cites the Sumeru verses, which are the verses of Bodhisattva Shenghui; the lower half says: "If one understands dharmatā like this, / one immediately perceives Rocana." Prior to this there is a verse that explains by inversion, saying: "Those who are deluded and ignorant / falsely grasp the characteristics of the five aggregates. / Not understanding their true nature, / such people do not see the Buddha." The profound purport therein is as in the commentary following the sūtra.
