> Regarding the commentary's "This tenth..." and following: the third \[section\] concludes the classification and cites proof-texts; first it concludes the classification, and later it cites proof-texts. Now, regarding the first: Because within the third fundamental gateway the identical and different are interfused, here it directly interfuses the preceding six gateways, so that the three gateways in distinct essences and the three gateways in identical essences mutually accomplish one another. Without distinct essences, identical essences would not be established; without identical essences, distinct essences would not be established; hence the six gateways mutually accomplish one another. The subsequent seven gateways arise from the preceding three, and because the preceding three are interfused, the subsequent seven must also be interfused; therefore the ten gateways share a single principle. Following the precedent of the third \[gateway\], the interfusing penetration also has six propositions: (1) Or, taking the entire essence as completely distinct, possessing both entering and identity together. (2) Or, taking the entire essence as completely identical, likewise possessing both entering and identity together. (3) Or, possessing both identity and difference, because both appear without two essences. (4) Or, doubly negating both identity and difference, because through mutual negation both are completely extinguished—that is, identity is difference and hence not identical; difference is identity and hence not different. (5) Or, possessing all four, in order to serve as the sphere of understanding. (6) Or, completely transcending the preceding five, in order to constitute the sphere of practice. Therefore, in explaining the principle in terms of cognition, the various gateways are distinct. Setting aside cognition and forgetting the fish-trap, everything is ineffable. Speaking and not speaking are unobstructed and difficult to conceive; plunging into identity with the ocean of fruition, only when words are extinguished and illumination is relinquished can one approximate this profound purport.
