> Regarding the Commentary's passage, "2. Greatness of characteristics," etc.: there are two points of significance. The nature-virtues as numerous as the sands of the Ganges are identical to the Awakening of Faith. From "mutually identical and entering one another" onwards, this reveals the non-obstruction between phenomena and phenomena of the Complete Teaching, and is also inherent in the nature. However, when Master Huiyuan explained nirvāṇa, he also clarified essence, characteristic, and function: essence in terms of inherently pure nirvāṇa, characteristic in terms of upāya-purified nirvāṇa, and function in terms of response-and-transformation nirvāṇa; this encompasses both cause and fruit. Here, in clarifying that these three exist within the dharma that is realized, it is not the same as his.
