In the former part there are four aspects: first, number; second, simile; third, dharma; and fourth, meaning; their applications can all be understood. Regarding "the ten supreme characteristics in the Liang translation of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha," that treatise states: "Based upon the Mahāyāna, the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, have ten characteristics of supreme, excellent speech: 1. the supreme, excellent speech of the support of the knowable; 2. the supreme, excellent speech of the characteristics of the knowable; 3. the supreme, excellent speech of the entry into the characteristics of the knowable; 4. the supreme, excellent speech of the causes and fruits of that person; 5. the supreme, excellent speech of the distinctions in cultivating those causes and fruits; 6. the supreme, excellent speech of higher morality within the distinctions of cultivation of the Tathāgata; 7. the supreme, excellent speech of higher thought within this; 8. the supreme, excellent speech of higher wisdom within this; 9. the supreme, excellent speech of that fruition's abandonment; 10. the supreme, excellent speech of that fruition's cognition. Through these phrases spoken in the sutras of the Buddhas, the Mahāyāna is revealed, and they are truly the word of the Buddha."
