> Regarding the Commentary's "According to reality, feelings regarding past and present perish" and so forth: this is the third, the final teaching. "Feelings regarding past and present perish" refers to the perspective of contemplative practice. Simply being without conceptual thought constitutes initial attainment. The mind being without initial characteristics: as the \*Awakening of Faith\* says, "When a bodhisattva's stages are exhausted, he awakens to the mind's initial arising; the mind is without initial characteristics, because by being far removed from subtle thoughts, he attains the vision of the mind's nature. The mind is then eternally abiding, which is called ultimate awakening." Here the Commentary weaves its phrasing into use.
