> Regarding the Commentary's "Defilement opposes nature-purity" and so forth: this resolves an outside objection. That is, someone asks: Since nirvāṇa contains nothing that it does not embrace, and defilement and purity are both within it, why is it that fruition and function are said to be 'produced', whereas dwellings and houses are not said to be 'produced'? Therefore it is now explained: dharmas of defilement and purity are indeed embraced by nirvāṇa; purity conforms to the essence, while defilement opposes the essence. Only when one realizes and merges with nirvāṇa is there great function; hence it is called 'production'. Since defilement opposes purity, it does not arise from this. Yet its essence is not separate \[from nirvāṇa\]; hence it is said to 'manifest in dependence on it'.
