The two vehicles know that the self is empty and phenomena exist; the bodhisattva knows that phenomena are empty and the self exists. However, the self that is emptied by the two vehicles is also emptied by the bodhisattva—meaning grasping at a self. If within the phenomena of non-self there is a true self, the bodhisattva knows its existence, whereas the two vehicles do not know it.
