> Regarding the commentary's phrase “A sūtra pours forth an inexhaustible gushing spring” and what follows: for the word “sūtra” alone, four meanings are set forth, but they are also simply two: namely, threading and gathering. The “gushing spring” is precisely the meaning and flavour that is gathered. “Constancy” applies across the preceding three. First, regarding “pours forth an inexhaustible gushing spring”: these words still apply generally to all teachings. Second, “threads together the profound and still wondrous meaning”: applying the general to the specific, it specifically threads together the profound and wondrous meaning of the Avataṃsaka. “Still” (ning) means serene and deep, an appearance of solemn order. Third, “gathers the boundless oceanic assembly”: this is the meaning of “gathering”. The “boundless oceanic assembly” is confined to the assembly of this sūtra, excluding other assemblies. Fourth, “serves as an everlasting, constant norm”: this is the meaning of “constancy”. It is explained elsewhere that constancy refers to the path and standard for all kings. Here as well, applying the general to the specific, it pertains specifically to this sūtra. The Dharma-eye is ever complete, because it lacks nothing. It is an everlasting exposition, not one adapted to mere circumstance. Enduring eternally without error, it may be called constant. The explanation of the title is concluded.
