> Regarding the commentary's statement, "Depending on light there is shadow," and so on: the commentary divides the two characters ying (shadow/reflection) and xiang (image) into two analogies: ying refers to the analogy of light and shadow, and xiang refers to the analogy of the mirror image. However, while these two analogies generally apply to everything, here specific meanings are taken. The analogy of light and shadow illustrates that the Buddha manifests in many ways, and thus it says there are movement and quiescence: when the substance moves, the shadow moves; when the substance is quiescent, the shadow is quiescent. The mirror-image analogy illustrates the superiority and inferiority of manifested bodies, such as the sixteen-foot body, the three-foot body, the thirty-two marks, etc., being seen according to capacity. (End of the second fascicle of the sūtra).
