> Regarding the commentary’s statement, "The shadow cast by the treading feet reaches even to those down in suffering, making their bodies and minds peaceful and joyful for seven days": Chapter 26 of the \*Nirvāṇa Sūtra\* states, "Take, for example, a frightened dove: when it entered the shadow of Śāriputra, it still trembled with fear; when it entered the Buddha’s shadow, it became serene, peaceful, and joyful. When the World-Honoured One treads the ground, he is four fingers above the ground, yet the insects beneath his feet all gain rebirth in heaven. Planting even a small root of goodness with the Tathāgata is like eating a diamond: one will definitely reach nirvāṇa."
