> As for the commentary's "distinction by four propositions," there are three types of tetralemmas: First, each is considered relative to its own category to produce four propositions. The four within giving are: (1) it is giving but not a pāramitā, because it is giving that is not associated with the seven superiorities; (2) it is a pāramitā but not giving, because rejoicing in another's giving is endowed with the seven superiorities; (3) it is both giving and a pāramitā, because giving is endowed with the seven superiorities; (4) it is neither giving nor a pāramitā, because rejoicing in another's giving is not associated with the seven superiorities. Second, without regard to category, for one who cultivates in sequence, in clarifying the four propositions, giving alone has only two propositions—as the other pāramitās have not yet been accomplished, two propositions are lacking, namely: it is a pāramitā but not giving, and it is neither giving nor a pāramitā. The remaining five, morality and the rest, can have four propositions, because prior giving-pāramitā has occurred and can be considered a pāramitā, yet is not morality, etc. That is: (1) it is morality but not a pāramitā, meaning it is not associated with the seven superiorities; (2) it is a pāramitā but not morality, which is the prior giving-pāramitā endowed with the seven superiorities; (3) it is both morality and a pāramitā, because keeping morality is endowed with the seven superiorities; (4) it is neither morality nor a pāramitā, meaning prior giving that was not endowed with the seven. Patience relative to morality, and vigor relative to patience, follow the sequence like morality. Third, for one who does not cultivate in sequence, each of the pāramitās can possess the four propositions. For example, giving relative to patience, morality, and the other pāramitās can have propositions such as "it is a pāramitā but not giving," etc., which can be deduced accordingly. The above explanation of pāramitā is the section on clarifying characteristics in that treatise and commentary, meaning it reveals the characteristics of the pāramitās. Therefore, the beginning of this treatise states: "These ten characteristics require the seven superiorities," etc.
