> As for the commentary's "furthermore, the first three benefit sentient beings," etc., this is the fifth approach, benefiting beings and severing delusions. Thus the seventy-eighth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi, the Saṃdhinirmocana, and others say: because of two causes and conditions, the six pāramitās neither increase nor decrease. This is precisely its meaning. Giving wealth gathers them in, morality does not afflict or harm them, and patience endures their afflictions—these three all universally possess the aspect of benefiting. Regarding the latter three, "diligently cultivating application of effort," the Yogācārabhūmi says: "Through vigor, although one has not yet eternally severed afflictions or permanently eradicated latent tendencies, one is able to valiantly cultivate all wholesome qualities, and those afflictions cannot overturn one's application of effort in wholesome qualities." Hence the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: "Although not yet subdued or eliminated, one is able to diligently cultivate the application of effort that purifies wholesome dharmas; through dhyāna one permanently subdues afflictions, and through prajñā one permanently severs latent tendencies." Therefore the commentary says "permanently subduing and permanently eliminating." The eleventh fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā also contains this explanation.
