> As for the commentary's "vow assists vigor," the Great Treatise states: "Through right aspiration, one is able to destroy weak intentions, render afflictions slight, and give rise to vigor in practice." As for "power assists dhyāna," the Saṃdhinirmocana states: "If bodhisattvas, taking drawing close to good friends, hearing the correct Dharma, and proper attention as causes and conditions, transform inferior intention into superior intention and also attain superior resolution of the higher realms, this is called the power pāramitā. Through this power, they abide within their mind with competence." Therefore it says the pāramitā of power assists meditation. As for "knowledge assists prajñā," that sūtra states: "If bodhisattvas, having skillfully practiced through the causes and conditions of hearing the Dharma, are able to generate dhyāna, this is called knowledge. Due to this knowledge, their nature can generate supramundane wisdom." Therefore knowledge is said to assist prajñā. Hence the latter four assist the former six, enabling the practice of the former six pāramitās to be perfected; the former six cannot assist the latter four. The fifth is the approach of sequence; this contains four subdivisions: 1. the approach of bringing forth, 2. the approach of upholding, 3. the approach of coarse and subtle, 4. the approach of difficult and easy, which also concludes and connects to the above. Now, the first: the commentary states, "meaning each preceding one brings forth each subsequent one," which is the initial approach of bringing forth. That is, practicing giving brings forth upholding morality; due to upholding morality, patience is brought forth, and so on. Below "and through the subsequent," the second is the approach of upholding: giving originally intends to benefit others, while morality avoids afflicting them, thereby making giving all the purer, etc.; hence it says "and through each subsequent one, each preceding one is maintained and purified." Below the third, "furthermore, each preceding," is the approach of coarse and subtle: giving is coarse, while morality is subtle; relative to patience, morality is coarse and patience is subtle, and so on; hence it says "each preceding is coarse, and each subsequent is subtle." The first nine are all "each preceding," and from morality to knowledge all are called "each subsequent"; because each is viewed relative to the other, the words are repeated. The very first is solely preceding, the very last is solely subsequent, and the eight intermediate pāramitās are mutually preceding and subsequent. Below the fourth, "easy and difficult cultivation," is the approach of difficult and easy, which also concludes and connects to the three above. The four approaches above are all as explained in the Yogācārabhūmi and the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā.
