> Regarding the commentary's citation: "The Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra says: 'The tathāgatagarbha-consciousness suddenly manifests all bodies, receptacles, and various enjoyments'": the above is from the first fascicle of that sūtra; however, that passage clarifies the meaning of "sudden." This is the third \[instance, where\] the metaphor of the storehouse consciousness's sudden knowing serves as a metaphor for the reward body's sudden completion. The sūtra says: "Just as the storehouse consciousness suddenly discerns and knows what manifests from its own mind, as well as the realm of the body's established enjoyments." This is the metaphor. The sūtra continues: "Those primary and secondary \[retributions\] are also like this: they suddenly mature the realms inhabited by sentient beings, because practitioners are settled in that Akaniṣṭha heaven." Explanation: The present commentary does not take up that which is illustrated (the tenor), but only takes up the text of the vehicle of the metaphor, namely the storehouse consciousness's sudden transformation. From "Receptacles refers to vast lands" onward, it correlates the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra with the present sūtra. The above citation of the Laṅkāvatāra doubly corroborates the third and fourth phrases: "vast lands" corresponds to the third phrase, arising from the samādhi gate of manifesting all Buddha-lands of the three times; "mansions" corresponds to the fourth phrase. Therefore, the commentary matches them with the two words "enjoyment" (saṃbhoga/upabhoga). That sūtra only says "realms of enjoyment." Enjoyment is twofold: first, the external receptacle realms produced by common karma, which are the sudden transformations of the tathāgatagarbha-consciousness. Its "mansions" are the uncommon within the common; both belong to enjoyment. The single word "receptacle" is introduced as an interpretive paraphrase in order to match the two phrases.
