> Regarding the commentary's "The Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra goes straight up to Neither Thought \[nor Non-Thought\]": the sūtra says: "When these human kings hold incense burners in their hands to make offerings to the sūtra, its fragrance spreads everywhere, reaching in a single thought-moment to the hundreds of kotis of suns and moons throughout the great trichiliocosm, up to the hundreds of kotis of Neither-Thought-nor-Non-Thought Heavens." As for "now relying on the two sūtras," this refers to the Suvarṇaprabhāsa and this sūtra's text. In terms of having a physical location, it reaches only to the summit of the form realm; in terms of encompassing the dharmas of that stage, it pervades the four formless \[heavens\]. The four formless \[heavens\] have no location; their fruits are attained according to the location, as when one attains formless absorption while in the desire realm, one receives the karmic retribution right within the desire realm; hence there is no separate location, and they are subsumed within the two realms. Yet they all extend through the twenty-eight heavens. If so, how can this be reconciled with the various sūtras and treatises? The meaning says: provisionally taking the Second Dhyāna, speaking directly of its measure, it equals a small thousand-world; one Third Dhyāna's measure equals a medium thousand-world's measure; one Fourth Dhyāna's measure equals a great thousand-world's measure. The trichiliocosm in sequence covers below from above, like summer clouds universally blanketing the nine provinces: if taken by provinces, there are nine clouds; if taken by commanderies, there are over four hundred clouds; if taken by counties, a thousand is not many; or it is said that one cloud universally covers ten thousand states, or that the ten thousand states each have summer clouds. Contemplating this, it can be understood.
