> In the Commentary, from "Since the nature of the mind is one..." onward is the second: concluding directly. First, it uses the root to challenge the branch; later, from "Since phenomenal dharmas are many..." onward, it uses the branch to challenge the root. Therefore, it first concludes: "The root and branch contradict each other." This conclusion has four aspects: first, the root and branch contradict each other, considered in terms of that which produces and that which is produced; second, phenomena and principle, speaking directly of essence and nature; third, oneness and difference, speaking solely of their characteristics—yet oneness has both phenomenal and principled, and here it is principled oneness; fourth, truth and delusion, speaking solely of their substance—yet truth also extends to phenomena, such as the Buddha's true wisdom and so forth, but here it also considers principle as truth. Because their contained meanings differ, there are four conclusions, which are broadly the same with slight differences.
