> Regarding the commentary's passage, "Some say that this Buddha's spiritual penetrations are of the same essence..." and so forth: this is the third, separately recounting the fifth master, namely the author of the Kanding ji. It also first recounts the past \[view\] and afterward discerns concordance and contradiction. In the former, it takes the pervasiveness of the essence as unmoving, and the responsive manifestation of function as still ascending. Regarding the commentary's passage, "If so, how does it differ from the third master's 'not rising is the Dharma'...", this is the second, discerning contradictions. Here there are two refutations: first, refuting by pointing out its identity with the previous view. Since the previous view cannot be established, this view collapses on its own. Second, from "Furthermore, glossing 'not rising' by 'abiding'..." onward, it directly refutes it on the basis of what it established. If it merely abides at the tree of awakening, there is no pervasive essence. If it pervades the destination, how could going not be the pervasiveness of the essence? Yet the tree of awakening is also function, but he calls it exclusively essence; ascending to heaven has essence, but he calls it merely function. Therefore, there is a contradiction. It is not censuring the original establishment of operation and function of the same essence, for the correct position below is also operation and function that are identical to essence.
