> Regarding the Commentary's statement, "The first two lines are the contemplation of emptiness, because conditioned arising is without intrinsic nature," and so forth: these are explained in terms of the three contemplations; in each case, it first cites the sūtra to indicate the contemplation, and in the latter lines takes the sūtra's meaning to explain and establish the middle contemplation. In establishing this explanation, the Commentary has two meanings to explain the middle way contemplation of the next two lines: The first says: "Because by contemplating that all previously mentioned arising and ceasing dharmas are without nature..."—because they are all dharmas, they are not non-existent; because they are without nature, they are not existent. Because previously, contemplating only naturelessness was emptiness, and contemplating only conventional designation was conventionality; now the two are mutually identical, hence neither empty nor conventional: this is the meaning of the middle way. This clarifies the middle way in terms of the very dharmas of conditioned arising. The second says: "Characteristics and essence are precisely non-arising and non-ceasing"—this distinguishes the middle way in terms of the three natures. However, non-arising has many meanings, which can be summarized in two kinds: first, the non-arising of phenomena, because the characteristics of conditioned arising are precisely non-arising; second, the non-arising of principle, because the essence of the thoroughly established nature is fundamentally unborn. Now, since the sūtra speaks of covering all dharmas without distinguishing characteristics and nature, then both characteristics and essence are unarisen. Thus, the non-arising of the imagined nature is the contemplation of emptiness; the conventional existence of conditioned arising is the contemplation of conventionality; and the non-arising of conditioned arising along with the non-arising of the thoroughly established nature are both the contemplation of the middle way. Thus, the two systems of nature and characteristics both possess all three contemplations. However, these two verses can also be just the contemplation of nature-emptiness: the first two lines would directly distinguish nature-emptiness, hence saying "their intrinsic nature does not exist"; the next two lines on the contemplation of conventionality would resolve an objection, meaning there is an objection saying, "Since we visually perceive arising and ceasing, how can you say there is no arising?" Hence it explains: "It is merely spoken conventionally in accordance with the worldly." The next two lines on the middle contemplation directly show the principle of non-arising. Interpreting according to this aligns very well with the common understanding of the intention in the Madhyamaka treatises; yet it does not attain Nāgārjuna's profound purport, which is why the Commentary takes the three contemplations of the treatise to explain it.
