> Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Neither destroying nor maintaining": This explains the sūtra's attainment of the equal correct Dharma praised by the Buddhas. Thus, the third fascicle of the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa, the "Chapter on Seeing Akṣobhya Buddha," states: "Neither giving nor stingy; neither keeping precepts nor violating them; neither patient nor angry; neither diligent nor indolent; neither concentrated nor distracted; neither wise nor foolish; neither sincere nor deceitful; neither coming nor going; neither exiting nor entering." Here, taking this thrust, the meaning is applied solely to the single aspect of precepts. Because one does not violate them, phenomenal matters are not infringed; because one does not cling to maintaining them, one realizes that the precepts are empty and tranquil.
