> Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Also the precept of happiness in the two worlds among the nine precepts": The treatise says: "It should be known that this precept has briefly nine kinds. Namely, when bodhisattvas properly prohibit for sentient beings what should be prohibited (1); properly permit what should be permitted (2); properly gather in those sentient beings who should be gathered in (3); and properly tame those who should be tamed (4)—with the bodhisattva's bodily and verbal actions constantly proceeding in purity regarding these, these are called the four kinds of pure precepts. Furthermore, there are pure precepts that are practiced together with the remaining pāramitās of giving, patience, vigor, dhyāna, and prajñā, which make five kinds. In total, they are named nine kinds of pure precepts. They can cause oneself and others to attain peace and happiness in the present life and future lives." Explication: Here it only speaks generally of the fruit of compassion and wisdom. The fruit of wisdom comprehends all practices, which is associated with prajñā; hence it says "also is." If matching them individually: causing others to attain liberation and leave defilement behind is precisely prohibition and permission; these two precepts of prohibition and permission allow one to leave defilement behind and attain liberation. Causing others to be secure is gathering in. Causing others to be tamed has identical terminology. All of them cause others to obtain happiness in the two worlds. The five pāramitās assisting the precepts are subsumed within them, as they include the gathering of wholesome dharmas.
