> On the commentary passage beginning "Now, as for ultimate": it explains the initial pair to serve as an exemplar. The commentary text has three parts: First, an explanation based on the mutual interpenetration of the expedient and the real. Second, from "Furthermore, merely saying" onwards, an explanation brushing aside traces to enter the profound. "Alone, desolate, without reliance, the principle naturally merges in the profound" is from Master Sengzhao's \*Preface to the Śataka-śāstra\*, which has already been cited previously. Third, from "However, doubly negating" onwards, it further harmonizes and brushes aside the double negation. Double negation is the fourth section, and double illumination is the third section; harmonizing and brushing aside the two sections achieves the profound of the profound. Furthermore, within this fourth section, the initial explanation of the mutual interpenetration of the expedient and the real is itself double illumination; the subsequent explanation of brushing aside traces to enter the profound is itself double negation; only when doubly negating these two does one enter the profound. Moreover, since it harmonizes the third, it already contains the preceding two; therefore, the harmony of the four gates only then reveals profound subtlety. Hence, it concludes below: "Synthesizing the preceding sections, the principle reaches its culmination here." "The following sentences are all modeled on this" means that by analogy to the following sentences—as most of the sentences merely clarify the single meaning of the initial mutual interpenetration of the expedient and the real—it instructs that they should be understood like the initial sentence by analogy.
