> Fifth, the storehouse of hearing. Regarding the commentary's statement, "Because hearing is the root, in reality one has extensive knowledge": thus fascicle 6 of the \*Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā\* states: "Subhūti said to the Buddha: 'Among which all phenomena should one learn and should one know with unobstructed concordance?'" In explanation: this is the meaning of extensive knowledge. In the Buddha's answer below, it is largely identical with this list. The Buddha said: "'All phenomena' refers to wholesome phenomena, unwholesome phenomena, indeterminate phenomena; worldly phenomena, supramundane phenomena; with-outflows phenomena, outflow-free phenomena; conditioned phenomena, unconditioned phenomena; shared phenomena, and unshared phenomena." In explanation: of these ten categories of phenomena, only shared \[phenomena are discussed here\]; unshared \[phenomena\] are omitted here, because \[this chapter\] is unequivocally the unshared prajñā. That sūtra says: "What are shared phenomena? The four dhyānas, the four formless \[attainments\], the four immeasurable minds, and the four formless concentrations—phenomena such as these are called shared phenomena." The \*Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa\* explains: "Ordinary persons and noble ones share the places of birth and the places of meditative absorption, hence they are called shared phenomena." The sūtra says: "What are called unshared phenomena? The four applications of mindfulness up to the eighteen unshared qualities—these are called unshared phenomena." The commentary explains: "The bodhisattva discriminates and knows that each of these phenomena is without characteristic; because these phenomena arise from the combination of causes and conditions, they lack intrinsic nature; lacking intrinsic nature, they are empty of self-nature." In explanation: these are noble ones' phenomena, not shared with ordinary persons. Like the eighteen unshared qualities and so forth, they are also not shared with the two vehicles. The rest is largely identical to this.
