> Regarding the commentary's passage beginning with "Fascicle nine of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra: 'Like a lotus flower'": this is from the 'Chapter on the Tathāgata Nature', which extensively praises the virtues of nirvāṇa; the commentary merely cites the simile. The matching text there says: 'All sentient beings are also like this: if they obtain the vision or hearing of the great nirvāṇa, those who have not yet generated the mind will all generate the mind, serving as the cause for bodhi. Therefore I say that the pore entered by the light of the great nirvāṇa will certainly become a wondrous cause. Although that icchantika possesses the Buddha-nature, yet being entangled in immeasurable sins and defilements, he cannot escape, like a silkworm in a cocoon.' Because the commentary has already used the matching text in the first part, now it only requires the simile. Regarding the commentary's "In the ninth month the blue lotus blooms", citing the twentieth fascicle of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra: this is from the 'Chapter on Noble Practice', where Jīvaka spoke to King Ajātaśatru. Because the World-Honoured One entered the moon-loving samādhi and emitted light illuminating the king, the king asked the reason, and Jīvaka replied, 'This is the Tathāgata entering the moon-loving samādhi and emitting light.' The king asked, 'What is called the moon-loving samādhi?' Jīvaka replied, 'For example, moonlight can cause all utpala flowers to blossom in fresh splendour. The moon-loving samādhi is also like this: it can cause the good minds of sentient beings to blossom.' Below it explains this extensively. Now we only take the moon blossoming the blue lotus. In correspondence, the Buddha's wisdom is the moon, and practice is the lotus blooming.
