> Regarding the commentary's phrase "possessing the great power of the limbs and joints of Nārāyaṇa": this is from the Northern recension of the Nirvāṇa \[Sūtra\], fascicle 11 (the Southern recension, fascicle 10, "Chapter on Manifesting Sickness"). Because the Buddha manifested reclining, Kāśyapa wondered and asked, "The Tathāgata is already free from the distress of sickness; for what reason does he recline leaning?" Thereupon he appraised and compared the Buddha's power, saying, "The power of ten small oxen is not equal to the power of one great ox; the power of ten great oxen is not equal to the power of one blue ox; the power of ten blue oxen is not equal to the power of one common elephant; the power of ten common elephants is not equal to the power of one wild elephant; next is a four-tusked elephant, next a white elephant of the Snow Mountains, next a Gandhamādana elephant, next a blue elephant, next a yellow elephant, next a red elephant, next a white elephant, next a mountain elephant, next an utpala elephant, next a puṇḍarīka elephant, next a champion wrestler (malla), next a bhagavanta, next an eight-armed Nārāyaṇa, and next the power of a single joint of a bodhisattva of the ten abidings—in each case, ten of the former are not equal to one of the latter." Like the previous six kinds, one therefore knows that the Buddha's power is inconceivable.
