> Regarding the commentary's: "It is the path of seeing characteristics" on downward, in explaining the path of seeing characteristics, the text is divided into three: first, directly explaining adornment in terms of the seeing of characteristics; second, explaining adornment in terms of both cognitions together; third, explaining the root treatise. In the first, "it is the path of seeing characteristics" identifies the stage. "It is subsequent cognition" reveals its essence. "Therefore the treatise calls it upāya" uses the treatise to substantiate the meaning of subsequent \[cognition\]. "Upāya is skill" uses the treatise to align with the sūtra. The commentary's: "modeling on the true path of seeing, it is established in various ways" explains the meaning of adornment. It is fully as cited above, referring to the three minds and sixteen minds; hence it says "established in various ways."
