> From the commentary’s "The reason for awaiting the request" downward is the second part, explaining the reason for the request. This commentary has two intents. Within the former intent, there are itself two meanings: first, to produce practice, generating reverence, because it is the practice of valuing the Dharma. Because the principal figures, the great assembly, and the Tathāgata bestow empowering support to request the exposition, they know the Dharma is worthy of esteem, and thus their reverence increases. Second, to serve as the cause for initiating the exposition; because he causes them to be reverent, Vajragarbha then expounds. From the commentary’s "Second, the previous fundamental section" downward is the commentary's second intent. It also subtly contains two intents: first, to produce practice. That is, producing correct understanding, for understanding is also practice. If one pairs request against exposition: the request is for generating understanding, and the exposition is for generating practice. If one considers only the request, understanding is also called practice; relative to the Dharma revealed, in terms of the person it is called practice. Second, revealing the Dharma. That is, the subsequent commentary says, "How does it generate understanding?" and so forth. That is, examining and explaining the understanding above directly reveals the Dharma. How does the request section reveal the Dharma? It is because it wishes to reveal that the essence of the grounds transcends words and thoughts. Regarding the commentary’s "Obtaining the reasons for exposition and silence": because of Vimukticandra's intent, the first is wondering at the silence, raising doubts, and making the request. The second is that Vajragarbha's Dharma is profound and difficult to accept, which is the reason for the silence. Therefore the sūtra says: "The matters of the bodhisattva's practice grounds, the supreme root of all buddhas, / are shown, discriminated, and expounded, most rare and difficult. / Subtle and difficult to see, transcending thoughts and surpassing the mental ground, / giving birth to the realm of the buddhas; those who hear it are all bewildered." This is the revelation of the essence of the grounds within the reason for silence.
