> On the commentary's "If according to Consciousness-Only" and below: fourth, it properly reveals the meaning of severing. Within this are three parts: 1. properly revealing Consciousness-Only; 2. clarifying conformity and conflict; 3. revealing the present tradition. In the first, regarding "two real paths of seeing," that commentary does not explain it. Some say: it means the real path of seeing and the path of seeing with characteristics. This explanation is unreasonable, because it says "two real," and the severing of afflictions takes place precisely during the real path of seeing. Some say: the two emptinesses of person and phenomena. This is also difficult to rely on, because the two emptinesses are what is realized, whereas here it speaks of that which is able to sever. Some say: the uninterrupted and liberation \[paths\] make two. These two should not be, because the severing of afflictions takes place precisely on the uninterrupted path. If so, what is the guide? It should be that the Great and Small Vehicles make two. Just prior to this, the treatise says: "When the path of seeing of the two vehicles manifests, it only severs one kind, which is called attaining the noble nature; when the bodhisattva's path of seeing manifests, it fully severs both kinds, which is called attaining the noble nature." The two kinds are precisely the two obscurations; there is a slight difference in the breadth and narrowness of what is severed, but for both the Great and Small \[Vehicles\] it is severed by the real path of seeing. However, the intent of that treatise is to differentiate from the Sarvāstivāda school. What that school posited is that before the path of seeing one abandons ordinary-being-nature, and when the uninterrupted path arises concurrent with the acquisition of afflictions, it is said to sever. Therefore, raising a tacit objection: "If ordinary-being-nature is renounced before the path of seeing, and the undefiled fruit arises, there is no fault of both ordinary and noble being simultaneously accomplished. Now, since it is posited based on the seeds severed by seeing, then the uninterrupted path has affliction-seeds concurrent with it. With the ordinary being not yet severed, how is there no fault of both ordinary and noble being simultaneously accomplished?" Thus the Cheng weishi lun says: "When the path of seeing arises, those seeds are not established, just as when light arises it does not coexist with darkness; hence there is no fault of both ordinary and noble natures being simultaneously accomplished. If the uninterrupted path were concurrent with the acquisition of afflictions, on the contrary there would be the fault of both ordinary and noble being simultaneously accomplished." The seventh fascicle of the Samuccaya also clarifies this meaning.
