> Regarding the sixth vow, in the commentary, from 'Yogācāra says' onwards distinguishes its variant names. From 'the present sūtra' onwards reconciles and explains them. 'Knowing the dwelling places of sentient beings and Buddhas': knowing the dwelling places of sentient beings, one goes to transform them; knowing the dwelling places of Buddhas, one goes to make offerings and serve them. In the new translation of the sūtra, the meaning of the word 'serving' is very prominent. The verse says: 'Within a single tip of hair and particle of dust, / lands adorned throughout the three times appear; / within all hair-tips in dust-mote lands of the ten directions, / I deeply enter and adorn them purely. / All future lamps that illuminate the world, / attaining the Way, turning the Dharma, awakening the multitudes, / completing the Buddha-work, and demonstrating nirvāṇa, / I go to them all and draw near.' Explanation: the preceding verse represents all characteristics, and the immeasurable characteristics of the true meaning; the latter verse directly explains serving and adorning the lands, and also concurrently transforms sentient beings. In the commentary, 'all characteristics' and so forth: 'all characteristics' are the characteristics of the lands; the 'characteristic of the true meaning' is the essence of the lands, as well as the mutual integration of nature and characteristics. The worlds being truly so is called the true meaning. However, its measurement is taken as a trichiliocosm, which is merely provisionally using the expedient and the real together. It should be understood like the 'Chapter on the Accomplishment of the World' and so forth. Therefore, below, the third part distinguishes immeasurable characteristics, where the commentary says: 'the coarse is called form'; in principle, the formless realm corresponds to the subtle, and the lower two realms are coarse. Since explaining breadth and so forth is based on the trichiliocosm, coarseness and subtlety are also provisionally situated in the three realms. The remaining meanings are all like the first assembly.
