> Regarding the commentary's phrase "Huiguan of Daoyang," this refers to the monk from Daoyang Monastery in Shangyuan. As for the "five teachings," they are: first, the teaching of characteristics; second, the teaching of non-characteristics; third, the teaching of deprecation and praise; fourth, the teaching of shared convergence; and fifth, the teaching of eternal abiding. By "deprecation and praise," it means deprecating the śrāvakas and praising the bodhisattvas. Duke Liu's five \[teachings\] are: first, the teaching of humans and devas; second, the teaching of characteristics; third, the teaching of non-characteristics; fourth, the teaching of shared convergence; and fifth, the teaching of eternal abiding.
