> Regarding the commentary's "Third, the practice of gathering \[beings\] through the upāya of cultivation": within this there are also two parts: first, explaining the name of the practice; next, from "The text is divided..." onward, sectioning and explaining. Now, the first: regarding the characteristics of the practice of gathering through upāya, the commentary's text already provides this completely; now it is first shown in brief. That is to say, because of the previous three kinds of contemplation, the bodhisattva knows that saṃsāra has many faults and sentient beings have not yet escaped it, and that the Buddha's wisdom has great benefit and sentient beings have not yet attained it. He then considers: sentient beings have fallen into manifold sufferings; by what means can they be extricated to attain nirvāṇa? He immediately knows that it is not apart from unobstructed cognition, and further that it is not apart from skillful extensive learning. Thereupon he seeks the true Dharma, and having attained it, he reflects and cultivates, entering the dhyānas and the formless \[attainments\]. Depending on concentration, he contemplates phenomena and attains the wisdom of non-arising. Depending on the wisdom of non-arising, he generates real awakening. Depending on real awakening, he attains unobstructed cognition, and is then able to extricate sentient beings from the suffering of saṃsāra and attain the bliss of nirvāṇa. Such is the characteristic of gathering. Regarding the commentary's statement, "Taking up the previous two practices as three causes": the two practices are protecting against afflictions and protecting against the Hīnayāna. Within the practice of protecting against the lesser, there are narrowness and smallness; hence there are three causes.
