> Regarding the commentary's citation of "flattery and deceitfulness (xianbi)": The Preface to the Mao Shi says, "Within, \[she\] had the intent of advancing the worthy, and was without a mind of flattery and deceitfulness." The Cangjie pian says, "Bi means flattering and deceitful." Regarding the "fruit of retribution": The sūtra says that one "attains a hundred thousand samādhis: one hundred on the First Ground, one thousand on the Second Ground"—this is a tenfold increase. "A hundred thousand on the Third Ground" is already a hundredfold increase. "A hundred million (yi) on the Fourth Ground." However, that "hundred thousand" has already used the middle method of counting, in which a hundred hundreds are transformed before becoming ten thousand. If a million is an yi, then the Fourth Ground relative to the Third is also a hundredfold. "A hundred billion on the Fifth Ground" is already a thousandfold. "A hundred thousand billion on the Sixth Ground"—if this means a hundred units of a thousand billion, it is also a hundredfold. If it refers collectively to a hundred thousand billion, then the number is hard to divide. "A hundred thousand billion nayutas on the Seventh Ground" is already a nayuta-fold, because there are a hundred thousand billion nayutas. According to the "Asaṃkhyeya Chapter," "One hundred lakṣas make one koṭi"—this is the middle count, where a lakṣa is an yi, and a koṭi corresponds to a zhao. Next it says that a koṭi times a koṭi is an ayuta, and an ayuta times an ayuta is a nayuta. From here on, all use the superior method of counting, multiplying twofold at each step; therefore, a hundred thousand billion nayutas is already beyond the scope of cognition by the conscious mind. How much more so when the Eighth Ground says "the number of dust motes in a million major chiliocosms," the Ninth Ground says "the number of dust motes in a million asaṃkhyeya lands," and the Tenth Ground says "samādhis numbering the dust motes of ineffable hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of Buddha-realms," etc. These three upper grounds all take the dust motes of worlds to correspond to a single previous number, and are thus the most inconceivable among the inconceivable! How much more so when, at the conclusion of each ground, it states: "If by the superior power of vows \[one counts\], even exceeding this by a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, or hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of kalpas, it could not be known by calculation." This is in terms of progressive stages—how much more so in terms of round fusion? Because ascending the grounds is difficult to measure, numbers are briefly assigned to distinguish depth and shallowness. The tracks of birds in the sky are hard to explain. The Yingluo \[jing\] also says: "On the First Ground, a single thought of the markless dharmakāya accomplishes a million asaṃkhyeyas of merits. Illuminating both truths simultaneously, mind upon mind is quiescence; within the stream of Dharma, the two kinds of dharmakāya cannot be measured by the ordinary conscious mind. How much less so the Second Ground, Third Ground, up to the Equal Enlightenment Ground! It is only in terms of the path of transformation and response that the First Ground can be said to possess a hundred bodies, a thousand bodies, ten thousand bodies, and up to immeasurable bodies," etc. Explanation: Relying on such texts, these amounts are provisionally assigned; they do not express the ultimate principle.
