> Regarding the commentary from "second, in terms of \[what occurs\] within the ground" below: This explanation has four parts: first, citing the treatise for the primary explanation. Now, the text of the Vijñaptimātratā expresses the meaning of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha; what is directly cited next is the meaning of the seventh \[fascicle\] of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. Vasubandhu explains: "Because within this ground one dwells in the supreme factors of bodhi, by dwelling in this, one is able to burn all fundamental afflictions and secondary afflictions into ashes. However, taking the factors of bodhi to be wisdom does not mean they are all wisdom; because they are the radiance of wisdom, it is named after this metaphor." Second, from "by dwelling in the Fourth" below, \[the commentary\] confirms the above meaning of \[what occurs\] within the ground by means of the text. Third, from "if only" below, it indirectly confirms the preceding meaning. Fourth, from "because this ground directly clarifies" below, it resolves an objection. The objection says: If one accepts this first explanation, why do the treatises mostly follow the second? Therefore, this explanation is given; its purport can be known. Within this, there are two parts: first, the primary resolution; next, from "the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says" below, it presents many textual explanations. It briefly raises five explanations: First, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, which is the seventh fascicle above. Second, the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, corresponding to the thirteenth \[fascicle\]. Third, citing the Yogācārabhūmi, which is also the fourth, its text being largely the same as before. Fourth, citing the Suvarṇaprabhāsa, which is the third fascicle of the sūtra, stating: "Because it can burn afflictions with the light of wisdom and increase illumination, it is the basis for cultivating the factors of the path; therefore, the Fourth Ground is called Radiant." Fifth, citing the Prakaraṇāryavācā, which also corresponds to the third \[fascicle\]; the treatise says: "The Radiant Ground means that when bodhisattvas dwell in this ground, because they have previously well cultivated and purified the Third Ground, they transcend all grounds of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, realize extremely pure cognition of all factors of awakening as the cognitive object, and their subtle wisdom-aggregate is able to manifest and burn all afflictions; therefore, this ground is named Radiant." Now, the meanings of these five explanations all support one another; hence, the commentary generally states that "they do not differ from this intention."
