> Under the Commentary's "All say 'notion'," the third part explains the word 'notion' (saṃjñā) in particular: first according to the Hīnayāna, and then according to the Mahāyāna. In the former, the Kośa says: "It is also generally called eliminating the notion of form." However, the formless is also twofold: first, obtained by birth; obtained by birth is the fruit, and the fruit extinguishes material shape. Second, obtained by cultivation; obtained by cultivation is in the cause: when a body residing in the desire or form realms cultivates the absorption of space, it only extinguishes the notion. A question might be asked: Why not extinguish the rest? Therefore the Commentary answers: "Because notions grasp the characteristics of form, it specifically speaks of extinguishing \[them\]," not that it does not extinguish the rest.
