> Regarding the Commentary's "causes of awakening for the various vehicles": because it applies to the bodhi of the three vehicles. The Chapter on Sages and Worthies in the Abhidharmakośa states: "Awakening refers to the cognitions of exhaustion and non-arising; because they accord with this, they are named factors (aṅga)." The explanation states: "Awakening" means that the sleep of ignorance is forever severed; the cognitions of exhaustion and non-arising constitute the essence of this awakening. The thirty-seven factors accord with and proceed toward bodhi, so they are named bodhipakṣadharma. Here, "accord with" also carries the meaning of "cause."
