> Regarding the Commentary's line, 'However, the above lines,' and so forth, this explains generating the sprout of name-and-form, in which there are three parts: First, it concludes the preceding and introduces what follows. From 'namely, what is generated' onward, second, it establishes the rationale: it ought to state the generation of consciousness, and therefore it cites the mental consciousness of the Kośa, precisely because it concludes the aggregates of rebirth. Third, from 'Now, because previously' onward, it brings out the reason for calling it name-and-form. There are two reasons: first, according to the concealed and the revealed; second, because name-and-form and consciousness are inseparable. Within the former, there are also two parts: first, it directly clarifies the concealed and the revealed; second, it brings out the reason. Now, in the first, the five seeds only reveal the mental seeds, while the five actualities only reveal the latter four. The five seeds obtain their names in relation to the five fruits; how could one obtain the five fruits without consciousness? Therefore it says, 'omitting its overall retribution.' The overall retribution is precisely the eighth consciousness; in the Mahāyāna, the eighth is the essence of the consciousness branch, while the remaining seven consciousnesses are subsumed under the name-and-form branch and thus rely upon the eighth, hence called 'the support.'
