> As for the commentary from "no-self" onward: second, concluding with no-self. This is easy to understand. As for the commentary from "no agent and no experiencer" onward: third, concluding with emptiness. Because the sūtra has the word "agent/person" (zhe), it resembles personal emptiness; personal emptiness is the no-self above. Now, as for the substance that lacks an agent and an experiencer: in the cause it is the agent, and in the fruit it is the experiencer. The capable agent and capable experiencer are the self; what is made and what is experienced are alike called "what belongs to the self." However, the self being the capable agent is solely the doctrine of the Vaiśeṣikas. According to the Sāṃkhya masters, the self is not the capable agent; the primordial nature (prakṛti) is the capable agent. Since the capable agent in relation to the self admits of agreement and divergence, and what is made and experienced are not restricted to what belongs to the self, then Īśvara and the like are also called creators; therefore it covers all dharmas of cause and fruit, which is called manifesting emptiness. Thus avidyā is also a capable agent, and formations are what is made. Moreover, formations are the capable experiencer, and consciousness and so forth are what is experienced. Thus they also lack inherent nature and are entirely empty and quiescent.
