> Regarding the Commentary's line beginning 'Now first, referring back to the preceding immeasurables,' the text of the Commentary has four parts: first, a brief explanation of the sūtra; second, from 'However, as it is allowed to run on spontaneously' onward, showing the characteristics of effortless operation; third, 'Because this has already been fulfilled through effortful practice' states the cause of effortless operation; fourth, from 'This, then, in terms of cultivation and practice' onward, forms the conclusion distinguishing it. Regarding the third, 'dual practice,' the Commentary's text has two parts: first, a general explanation of the title and its intent; afterward, the explanation of the text. In the first part, there are two: first, setting out the sections; second, critical analysis. Under 'Now first,' the Commentary fully explains the text throughout. Now it should be explained in general: (1) internal realization of practice wherein śamatha and vipaśyanā arise simultaneously constitutes the dual practice of two conducts. Constantly manifest in continuity, it is termed 'uninterrupted.' (2) The initial arising of superior progress, having certainty regarding the supreme, is termed 'superiority of faith.' (3) Arising practice based on faith, in which practice has beneficial purpose, it is therefore termed 'purpose'; being superior, it is termed 'great'; and being cultivated and brought forth, it is termed 'undertaking.' (4) The practice culminating in the cause of enlightenment is called 'factors of awakening' (bodhipakṣa); the 'factors' possess multiple meanings, and are referred to as 'differentiated.'
