> Regarding the Commentary's 'The three and the four maintainings and so forth,' 'and so forth' includes the thirty-seven factors \[of awakening\] and the three gates of liberation. The Commentary's text has seven parts: 1. Marking out the distinct antidotes, distinguishing them from what is subsequently known. 2. From 'That is to say, relying on the four maintainings' onward, showing the purification of defilements, because it is only through these three that purification is possible. 3. From 'Sustaining and maintaining' onward, explaining the general name, distinguishing it from superior progress, calling it 'maintaining one's own portion.' 4. From 'Also called the four houses' onward, providing alternative names. 'Because they are dwelling places' explains and establishes the meaning of 'house.' They may also be called the four kinds of dwelling places, namely the dwelling place of cognition, etc. They are also called 'places of established stages.' 5. From 'The fourth is the house of prajñā' onward, explaining the essence and characteristics of the four in terms of 'house.' 6. From 'Due to the first two' onward, concluding and establishing the four meanings. Due to prajñā illuminating the truths, they are named the operations of the first two. Obtaining the eradication of defilement and the purification of suffering, there are four. 7. From 'If speaking in terms of distinct stages' onward, differentiating according to stage: the first is also called the stage of cognition; the second, the stage of seeing reality; the third, the stage of severing defilement; and the fourth, the stage of realizing cessation. However, these four pervade all stages; thus it says 'if speaking in terms of distinct stages' to correlate them with the four stages.
