> Regarding the commentary's statement, "The small characteristic": because what is known by a scattered mind is small, it is called small; because what is known by a concentrated mind is broad, it is called great. The measure of the first dhyāna is equal to the four continents; the second dhyāna's measure is equal to a small-thousand \[world\]; the third is equal to a medium-thousand; the fourth is equal to a great-thousand; hence it says "up to." Since the measures are pervasive and equal, it can cognize all pervasively. Regarding the "immeasurable characteristic": the Buddha's wisdom corresponds to the actuality of phenomena and principle, hence there is no quantitative measure. Regarding "The distinct characteristic is the delimitation of phenomena": if one speaks of large and small, that is delimitation. Knowing the solid characteristic of earth, the wet characteristic of water, etc., is called knowing their own characteristics (svalakṣaṇa); sharing impermanence and so forth is called knowing their common characteristics (sāmānyalakṣaṇa). Both characteristics are the delimitations of phenomena.
