> Regarding the Commentary's words, "This teaching," below, this explains what is expounded. Dharmas produced from conditions lack intrinsic nature and are directly empty; it is not that form is destroyed to make emptiness, nor is there a need for analytical deconstruction; hence it is called "directly empty." If explained in terms of the four lines of the verse in the Madhyamakaśāstra: the first teaching corresponds to "dharmas produced by causes and conditions"; this teaching corresponds to "I declare them to be empty"; the third corresponds to "it is also called provisional designation"; and the fourth corresponds to "it is also the meaning of the middle way." Therefore here it says "causes and conditions are directly empty." Regarding "the four true truths of non-arising": this is the second kind of four truths. That is, understanding suffering as devoid of suffering is called the truth of suffering; understanding accumulation as devoid of conjunction is called the truth of accumulation; understanding cessation as devoid of cessation; and understanding the path as devoid of path. The four truths are empty in nature and fundamentally free from arising and ceasing, unlike the first teaching which has that which arises and ceases. The Commentary's words, "It is the primary gateway to the Mahāyāna," distinguish it from the profoundly ultimate. It is called the primary gateway because it dispels existence with emptiness, but has not yet revealed the meaning of the middle way of wondrous existence.
