> Regarding the Commentary's statement, "The first two are the pairing of black and white," and so forth: this explains the distinctions paired in the treatise. Now, the treatise-sūtra fully possesses four propositions: black karma, white karma, black-and-white karma, and neither-black-nor-white karma. The treatise's explanation says: "Black karma is paired with white karma. White karma is paired with black karma. Neither-black-nor-white karma is paired with the two karmas; the 'two karmas' refers to the third, black-and-white karma." Hence it says, "the latter two are with-outflow and without-outflow," because without-outflow karma is also that which is both black and white. Furthermore, the present phrasing of "black-black" relies entirely on the Abhidharmakośa, which will be cited immediately below. Under the Commentary's statement, "Among the four, the first one has both cause and result being evil," it explains them separately. Now, explaining "black" by "evil" is the general meaning. The specific distinction is: the cause is evil because it is defiled; the result is evil because it is base and vile, not to be loved or delighted in. Generally explaining "white" by "good," the specific distinction is also different: the cause is white because its nature is undefiled; the result is white because it is to be loved and delighted in. However, the black in the former position is the cause, because it can incur a black result. The black in the latter position is the result, because it can repay a black cause. The white cause and white result may be understood analogously by this.
